Lucy's Classic Curls: 25mm barrel

Watch award-winning hairstylist Michael Douglas create beautiful classic curls on shoulder-length hair using the mdlondon CURL with the 25mm barrel attachment.

Why the mdlondon CURL Is Designed for Easier Styling

The mdlondon CURL features a unique right-angle design that sets it apart from traditional curling wands. As Michael explains, the ergonomic shape means your arm stays in a natural, comfortable position while styling — no awkward twisting or reaching. This makes the tool easier to use, which means two things: you're more likely to style your hair regularly, and you'll get better results when you do.

Four Interchangeable Barrels for Every Hair Type

The mdlondon CURL comes with four interchangeable barrels, each designed for different hair types and styles:

  • 25mm barrel — Perfect for classic, defined curls on medium-length hair (featured in this tutorial)
  • 32mm barrel — Creates softer, looser waves ideal for longer hair
  • 10mm barrel — Designed for tight, defined curls and naturally curly or frizzy hair types
  • 19–32mm reverse cone — Produces modern, beachy waves with natural-looking texture

With 14 adjustable heat settings, you can fine-tune the temperature to suit your hair type — from fine and delicate to thick and coarse.

How to Create Classic Curls: Step by Step

Choosing the Right Barrel Size

For Lucy's shoulder-length hair with layers, Michael selects the 25mm barrel rather than the larger 32mm. On medium-length hair, you need the hair to wrap around the barrel at least three times to create a true curl rather than just a wave. The smaller barrel ensures enough rotations for a defined, lasting curl.

Curling Technique

Michael curls sections in alternating directions — some clockwise, some anticlockwise. This creates a natural, lived-in look with plenty of body and movement, rather than uniform ringlets. The goal is curls that look like they belong naturally, with volume and bounce throughout.

Finishing and Styling

Once all the hair is curled, Michael flips the hair over the parting to build height, body, and volume at the roots. To define the curls and reduce any fluffiness, he works a small amount of styling clay through the hair — about the size of a 5p coin. Used like a serum but with more hold, the clay helps separate and define each curl beautifully. A light mist of hairspray locks the style in place.

The Finished Look

The result is gorgeous, classic curls with natural movement and volume — soft enough to look effortless, but defined enough to last all day. This look works beautifully for everyday styling, special occasions, or whenever you want to add bounce and glamour to shoulder-length hair.
