For different hair types:

Here's how you can adjust the settings on your STRAIT for different common hair types, along with recommended techniques and products.

Regardless of your hair type, always use a heat protectant before using the STRAIT tool. This protects your hair from potential damage and helps in achieving a smoother finish. Adjust the temperature in small increments based on your hair’s response to ensure you’re not using more heat than necessary. Always use STRAIT on dry hair.

Fine/Thin Hair

  • Suggested Setting: Low heat (around 120°C to 150°C).

  • Reason: Fine hair is more prone to heat damage, so lower temperatures are sufficient to straighten the hair while minimizing heat exposure.

  • Techniques: It often doesn't require as much heat to straighten fine hair. Take smaller sections to prevent missing any hair, and work quickly to avoid excess heat exposure. Only use one pass through the hair with the straighteners. Do not use the STRAIT again on the same section as this will increase heat damage.

  • Products: Apply a lightweight heat protectant before straightening and fine hair spray to maintain the straightness.

Thick Hair

  • Suggested Setting: High heat (up to 200°C).

  • Reason: Thick hair generally requires more heat to effectively straighten due to its density and volume. This ensures even heat distribution and consistent straightening.

  • Techniques: Work in smaller parts so that the heat penetrates effectively, allowing for more control and better results. Only use one pass through the hair with the straighteners. Do not use the STRAIT again on the same section as this will increase heat damage.

  • Products: Use an anti-frizz serum to help smooth the hair and keep it sleek. Finish with a high-shine serum to enhance the straight look.

Curly Hair

  • Suggested Setting: Medium to high heat (up to 180°C to 200°C).

  • Reason: Curly hair needs more heat to alter its structure from curly to straight. Adjust based on the tightness of the curl and responsiveness to heat.

  • Techniques: Straighten small sections at a time for thoroughness. Only use one pass through the hair with the straighteners. Do not use the STRAIT again on the same section as this will increase heat damage.

  • Products: Start with a strong heat protectant to shield from damage and finish with a smoothing serum to maintain the sleek texture and combat humidity.

Wavy Hair

  • Suggested Setting: Medium heat (around 150°C to 180°C).

  • Reason: Medium heat is adequate for smoothing waves into straight hair while maintaining some natural body without over-applying heat.

  • Techniques: Straighten in sections, following the natural wave direction to avoid damage. This hair type often straightens easily. Only use one pass through the hair with the straighteners. Do not use the STRAIT again on the same section as this will increase heat damage.

  • Products: Use a light anti-frizz spray to enhance smoothness without weighing down the hair. Follow with a lightweight fine spray for hold.

Straight Hair

  • Suggested Setting: Medium to high heat (up to 180°C to 200°C).

  • Reason: Medium heat is adequate for smoothing and reducing flyaways in straight hair while maintaining some natural body without over-applying heat.

  • Techniques: For straight hair, the STRAIT can be used to enhance shine and smoothness. Straighten in sections.. Only use one pass through the hair with the straighteners. Do not use the STRAIT again on the same section as this will increase heat damage.

  • Products: A shine-enhancing spray can be applied post-straightening to give a glossy, polished finish without adding extra weight.

Colour-Treated or Damaged Hair

  • Suggested Setting: Very low to low heat (below 150°C).

  • Reason: Heat can further damage or fade colour-treated hair, so lower settings can help preserve hair integrity and colour longevity.

Want to create a specific style using the STRAIT tool?

Read on for a quick guide to creating multiple styles. Remember to always use a heat protection spray to limit heat damage and never use the STRAIT again on the same section as this will increase heat exposure.

Sleek and Straight: Start with dry, brushed hair. Slowly glide the straightener down sections, ensuring each pass is smooth without pausing. Angle the straightener downwards for the sleekest finish.

Soft Waves:  Take a section of hair and place the straightener close to the roots. Twist the straightener 180°C away from your face and slowly pull through to the ends.

Flicked Ends Straighten each section as normal, but when you reach the ends, flick the straightener outwards or inwards depending on your desired shape.

Volume at Roots:  Place the straightener close to the roots and gently curve upwards as you pull through.
