How to set up WAVE for your hair type
WAVE has been designed to take you from flat lifeless hair to body and bounce, fuss-free in a matter of minutes!
What makes the WAVE truly unique is its retractable and lockable bristles, a feature that transforms it from a hot brush to a wand and back again, providing unmatched versatility in styling.
Start with Prep:
Start with dry hair, give it a light spray of heat protectant, and let that dry before using any heat styling tools. Then choose the right heat setting for your hair type:
Fine/Thin Hair:
-
Suggested Setting: Low heat (around 120°C to 150°C).
-
Reason: Fine hair is more fragile and requires lower temperatures to minimize damage while still effectively creating waves.
-
Techniques: Separate the hair into sections using sectioning clips. Take smaller sections of hair and use bristles on WAVE to smooth and flick to add volume and make the hair appear fuller. Consider using the WAVE close to the roots to lift and add body.
-
Products: Use a volumizing mousse or spray before styling and a lightweight hairspray after for hold.
Thick Hair:
-
Suggested Setting: High heat (up to 200°C).
-
Reason: Due to its density, thick hair can handle and often needs higher heat for styling tools to penetrate and form lasting waves.
-
Techniques: Use the bristles locked to detangle and smooth frizz while lifting roots. For styling waves, retract the bristles and wrap larger sections of hair around the barrel to create loose waves. For tighter waves, work with smaller sections.
-
Products: Consider using a smoothing serum to control frizz and a high-hold hairspray to keep the style intact.
Curly Hair:
-
Suggested Setting: Medium to high heat (up to 180°C to 200°C).
-
Reason: When using WAVE to alter or redefine curls into waves, sufficient heat helps reshape the curl pattern effectively.
-
Techniques: It’s often best to start by straightening the hair before using the WAVE for more controlled waves. Alternatively, just touch up the naturally curly areas to enhance or redefine the hair cuticle.
-
Products: A curl-defining cream can help in maintaining bounce and smoothness. Finish with an anti-humidity spray to lock in the style.
Wavy Hair:
-
Suggested Setting: Medium heat (around 150°C to 180°C).
-
Reason: Medium heat can enhance and redefine natural waves, giving them more shape and structure without risking heat damage.
-
Techniques: Focus on enhancing and defining your natural wave pattern. Work with the natural direction of your waves, and retract WAVE’s bristles to style specific sections needing added definition or volume.
-
Products: A texture-enhancing spray or sea salt spray can complement your waves, giving them a beachy look.
Straight Hair:
-
Suggested Setting: depending on thickness - for thick hair use high heat (up to 200°C) and for thinner hair use low heat (around 120°C to 150°C).
-
Reason: Strait hair often needs higher heat for styling tools to penetrate and form lasting waves.
-
Techniques: Use WAVE throughout to create long-lasting waves. Retract the bristles to wrap sections of hair for long-lasting waves. Because this hair type doesn’t naturally hold curls as well, make sure to hold each section longer to set the style.
-
Products: Start with a volumizing product and end with a strong-hold hairspray to help maintain the style.
Colour-Treated or Damaged Hair:
-
Suggested Setting: Very low to low heat (below 150°C).
-
Reason: Lower settings are crucial for minimizing further damage to fragile or chemically-treated hair, while still styling effectively.
-
Techniques: Use the WAVE throughout to create long-lasting waves. Because this hair type is damaged, retract the bristles to use the WAVE as a wand and reduce the time you hold each section against the heat.
-
Products: Start with a heat protection spray and finish with a fine hair spray

Classic Waves: Take uniform sections of hair and wrap them around the WAVE barrel in the same direction. Hold for a few seconds, then release.
Beachy Waves: Wrap sections of hair around the barrel, alternating the direction of the wrap for each section. Twist some strands before wrapping them around WAVE. Leave the ends slightly unfinished for a more natural look.
Tight Curls: Use smaller sections of hair and wrap them tightly around the barrel. Leave the hair on the barrel longer to intensify the curl.
Tousled Texture: Use WAVE randomly on different-sized sections of hair. Don’t worry about wrapping all in the same direction for a more dishevelled, effortless look.
Loose Waves with Volume: Use the WAVE on larger sections, and pull the hair slightly upwards while it's still wrapped around the barrel. This creates waves with added volume.
